About Us

It all started when…

Special Siblings started with an idea. That idea was formed by our founder, Katelyn McInerney, who knows first hand the challenges of having a special needs sibling. She often felt alone and felt her parents could not understand her experiences. She realized that if she felt this way, others must feel it too. And in creating this group, she realized there were others like her and together they could promote understanding, acceptance and support.

Katelyn McInerney serves as our Co-Founder and Co-President of our Board of Directors. She is a recent graduate of North Carolina State University where she majored in Statistics and Genetics. She is now a PhD student at UNC Chapel Hill studying Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Katelyn expanded Special Siblings from Birmingham to the Raleigh area and hosted her first meeting there in January, 2020.

Jenny McInerney

Co-Founder, Co-President
Jenny is an active member of the Special Siblings Board of Directors. She manages the finances and ensures the organization is compliant. She practices law at McInerney Law, LLC where she devotes her practice to helping families and small businesses with their legal needs.
In addition to serving as our Co-President, Jenny currently serves as the President of the Board of Directors of Susan G. Komen North-Central Alabama. She is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Jefferson County Intellectual and Developmental Disability Authority.

Libby Matthews

Vice- President
Libby is a proud board member of Special Siblings. Libby has assisted founder, Katelyn McInerney, since the formation of the group. She has helped lead the groups and guide the lesson plans of the meetings.
Libby has over 30 years of experience working with special needs children. She has a true passion for helping others and has a servant heart.
